The nights are drawing in and the weather is getting gloomier but that’s no reason to stop your outdoor exercise!
Here are some tips for making sure that you stay safe while out running in the dark:
1. Wear hi-vis clothing
Make sure that drivers can see you by wearing clothing with hi-vis stripes. Or some white clothing.
2. Plan your route
Check out your planned route beforehand. Is there enough street lighting? Is it safe to cross the roads you come across in the dark? If you’re running along a country path be prepared for unexpected obstacles in your way. Try to stick to popular routes.
3. Wear a head torch
This will minimise the risk of accident.
4. Always take your mobile phone with you
It’s so important to be able to get in touch with someone if you do get lost or suffer an injury.
5. Warm up and cool down
Be extra sure to warm up and cool down properly. It’s much harder to cope with an injury when it’s dark and people can’t see you to stop and help. Prevent injury by devoting a few minutes to a full warmup.
6.Wear just one headphone, or none
Make sure that you can hear approaching traffic. Always a good idea but even more important in the dark.
7. Always tell someone where you are going
Make sure someone knows your route, so if the worst happens they can come and find you. Yes, you’ve got your phone with you but what if there’s no signal or your battery has died?
Follow these simple steps and running at night-time is no problem! You just need to be a little more prepared and a little more careful.
